Artist Residences

The members of the Finnish Musicians’ Union have five artist residences at their disposal: in Kreuzberg in Berlin, Fulham in London, Beachwood in Los Angeles, Mijas in Spain and Villa Vikan residence in Raasepori.

The residences are furnished with work-related equipment. The members can use the residences for practising, other work or even promotional purposes.

Members of the Union and family members are welcome to travel to the residency with the applicant. Other people are also welcome to Villa Vikan. Villa Vikan’s cabin no. 2 can also accommodate pets, but they are not allowed in the other buildings. Pets are not allowed in the Berlin, London, Los Angeles and Mijas residences.

The Berlin residence is a furnished and well-equipped flat in an apartment building in the Kreutzberg district at Gneisenaustraße 113. The floor area covers more than 150 square metres on two floors.

There are no available residency weeks in the Berlin residence for the second half of 2024.

Apartment and its furnishing

The residence is a furnished and well-equipped residential unit in an apartment building in the western part of the Kreutzberg district at Gneisenaustraße 113. The floor area covers more than 150 square metres on two floors connected by an indoor spiral staircase. Upstairs, there is a large living room/work space, a dining room, kitchen and bathroom/toilet. Downstairs, there is a living room/workroom and two bedrooms and a bathroom/toilet.

The upstairs living room/workroom has a grand piano equipped with headphones for playing, for instance, during the night. The downstairs work/living area is equipped for electronic music work with a MIDI/USB keyboard, a 24-inch computer display, a mixer and Genelec powered speakers. Users need to bring their own laptop with them.

The upstairs living room has a large flat-screen TV and a 5.1 sound system. There is a TV also in the downstairs living area. The kitchen is equipped with a refrigerator/freezer, coffee maker, toaster, dishwasher and basin and cooking utensils. The downstairs bathroom has a washer dryer.

You can play and practise in a manner that is suitable in an apartment building, that is, within reason and taking neighbours into account.

The Berlin residence is non-accessible.

In the immediate vicinity of the apartment, there is a full range of services, such as restaurants, a pharmacy, a bank, a launderette, a metro station, a taxi stand and shopping facilities. Nearby, there are also places where you can enjoy music.

Rental

The residencies are open for application two times a year during the announced application periods via an application form. The applicant must be a member of the Finnish Musicians’ Union, and membership must have lasted for at least three months by the start of the residency period. This is also required for any other members of the Finnish Musicians’ Union who is joining the applicant.

The residence can accommodate up to seven people. Since the residence is mainly intended for work purposes, you can only be accompanied by members of your family.

As a rule, the rental period is one week, from Monday to Monday. This means, for example, that you have to pay a full week’s rent even if you only spend four days at the residence.

Prices

The weekly rent for the Berlin residence is EUR 430 including one set of linen (bed linen and towel) and a clean-up once a week on Monday afternoon. Additional guests (with additional linen) cost EUR 45 each (for example, a week for 4 persons would cost EUR 430 + EUR 135 = EUR 565).

The linen fee is charged from each person travelling with the applicant, regardless of age or whether they bring their own linen – the policy is the same for all the residencies of the Union.

The London residence is a furnished and well-equipped apartment in the Fulham district in the western part of London at 2 Knivet Road. The floor area of the four-storey apartment is approximately 150 square metres.

There are no available residency weeks in the London residence for the second half of 2024.

The residence is a furnished and well-equipped apartment in the Fulham district in the western part of London at 2 Knivet Road. With the renovation completed at the end of 2015, the residence now has one extra bedroom allowing larger groups to stay there. The floor area is approximately 150 square metres on four floors. Downstairs, there is a living room and a dining room/kitchen. On the mid-floor, there is an entrance hall, two bedrooms and a bathroom/toilet. Upstairs, there is a toilet/shower and two bedrooms, one with a work corner. From the ground floor, you can access the back yard where there is a sauna.

The downstairs living room has a grand piano equipped with headphones, so you can play it, for instance, during the night. The top floor has a work space with electronic equipment for music work, such as a MIDI/USB keyboard, a 27-inch computer display, a mixer and Genelec powered speakers. Users need to bring their own laptop with them.

The living room has a large flat-screen TV and a 5.1 sound system. The kitchen is equipped with a refrigerator/freezer, coffee maker, toaster, dishwasher and basin and cooking utensils. There is also a washer dryer downstairs.

You can play and practise in a manner that is suitable in an apartment building, that is, within reason and taking neighbours into account.

The London residence is non-accessible.

The weekly rent for the London residence is EUR 570 including one set of linen (bed linen and towel) and a clean-up once a week on Monday afternoon. Additional guests (with additional linen) cost EUR 50 each (for example, a week for 4 persons would cost EUR 570 + EUR 150 = EUR 720).

The linen fee is charged from each person travelling with the applicant, regardless of age or whether they bring their own linen – the policy is the same for all the residencies of the Union.

The rental price includes one sauna heating. For each following the price is EUR 8 per heating. The use of the sauna must be reported to the association office at the end of the rental period.

The Los Angeles residency will pause from the beginning of March 2025. Weeks 1–8/2025 will be open for applications during the application period from the 2nd to the 16th of September. Members of the Finnish Musicians’ Union can apply for the Bird Room for weeks 1–4 and the Echo Room for weeks 5–8.

The Ministry of Education and Culture’s support for residencies will end at the end of February 2025.

Located in Beachwood, Los Angeles, the residence is aimed for music performers and creators in Finland and Denmark. The residence offers opportunities for Nordic and intercontinental co-operation and networking, and Los Angeles offers good opportunities for networking with colleagues in the music field.

The residency can be used for networking or accommodation for business, music, training or other work. However, the residence is not fully soundproofed, and the walls let sound through, so it is well suited to quieter work.

The resicendy is located in Beachwood, Los Angeles, California at 6080 Rodgerton Drive. Trips to the residence are at your own expense.

The Los Angeles residence is non-accessible.

The house includes four bedrooms, of which the Bird, Echo and Loft rooms are available for booking for the Finnish organizations.

Common rooms

Kitchen

The shared kitchen has a fridge/freezer, a Nespresso coffee machine and a coffee machine, a microwave, a dishwasher, basic crockery and cooking utensils.

Living room

The common living room has a TV, stereo and fireplace. The TV also has Apple TV.

The residence also has a washing machine and dryer available for the tenants.

The rent for the Loft extra room is EUR 60/week, so the total rent for one week for the Echo room and the Loft room would be EUR 440/week.

The weekly rent includes one set of linen (bed linen and towel) and cleaning once a week. If you have a guest traveling with you, the cost of and additional set of linen is EUR 40. The set of linen is for one week, so for the person traveling with you the cost for linen for example two weeks is 2 x EUR 40 = EUR 80.

The project is organized in cooperation with the Finnish Musicians’ Union, the Finnish Music Creators and the Danish Music Creators Association DPA. The Ministry of Education and Culture has granted support for the project.

The beautiful destination of Mijas provides the perfect opportunity for inspiration.

The residency is located in a peaceful neighborhood near services and good transportation possibilities. The Mijas residence is perfect for working that requires peace and quiet, relaxation and also for exploring culture. The tenants can network with local colleagues.

You can get to the residency from the airport by public transportation or by taxi. In addition to public transportation, getting by is easy for example by an electric bicycle or rental car.

Apartments

The Ático and Salon apartments are located in the main house. The separate two-room apartment Cueva is also located in the main house.

You can rent the apartments together or separately.

The apartments are equipped for working on music. There is a wifi-connection, an acoustic guitar, a keyboard and a microphone stand both apartments.

The pool area is open for tenants from May to October.

Ático: The rent for the Ático apartment is EUR 520 including one set of linen (bed linen and towel) and cleaning once a week on Monday afternoon. If you have a family member traveling with you, the cost of additional set of linen is EUR 45 (for example, a week in Ático for 3 persons would cost EUR 520 + EUR 90 for additional linen = EUR 610)

Salon: The rent for the Salon apartment is EUR 580 including one set of linen (bed linen and towel) and cleaning once a week on Monday afternoon. Rental locations and their furnishing

Villa Vikan became available for artists at the beginning of July 2014 as a result of donations made to the Residence Fund by the Finnish Music Foundation, an organisation established by Teosto and Gramex. The beautiful villa built by Martin Wegelius at the end of the 19th century has been completely renovated for the use of professional musicians, composers and music authors. In addition to the main building, there are two log cabins available for renting. The Finnish Music Foundation owns the rental locations which can be rented through the Finnish Musicians’ Union, the Elvis Association and the Society of Finnish Composers.

The rental facilities are equipped for work purposes. In the main building, there is a Steinway grand piano, an electric keyboard, recording cabling with wall sockets, a monitoring system and AV equipment. The log cabins also have a work space equipped for electronic music work with keyboards and monitors. For more information on the equipment available in the buildings, see the rental guide. The Villa Vikan residence residence is non-accessible.

Vikan is located in Raasepori in the village of Persböle by the Långträsket lake at Vikan 30-31, Persböle, 10420 Pohjankuru. Vikan is approximately 10 kilometres away from Fiskars and the centre of Karjaa. Vikan is at a distance of 93 kilometres from Helsinki and 115 kilometres from Turku.

The residencies are open for application two times a year during the announced application periods via an application form. The applicant must be a member of the Finnish Musicians’ Union, and membership must have lasted for at least three months by the start of the residency period. This is also required for any other members of the Finnish Musicians’ Union who is joining the applicant.

Each of the Villa Vikan buildings can be rented separately, but a bigger party can also rent more buildings at the same time. Main building has four bedrooms and can accommodate 8 people at most, and both cabins can accommodate four people. All buildings are equipped with saunas. Only cabin 2 can accommodate pets, so pets aren’t allowed in other buildings.

As a rule, the rental period is one week from Monday to Monday. Rental period means, for example, that you have to pay a full week’s rent even if you only spend four days at the residence.

Tenants can arrive at earliest on Monday at 4pm and they are to leave at latest on Monday at 10am. Residences are cleaned on Mondays between 10am and 4pm.

The weekly rent for the main building is EUR 490 including one set of linen (bed linen and towel) and a clean-up once a week on Monday afternoon. Additional guests (with additional linen) cost EUR 39/90* each.

The weekly rent for a log cabin is EUR 380 including one set of linen (bed linen and towel) and a clean-up once a week on Monday afternoon. Additional guests (with additional linen) cost EUR 39/90* each.

*EUR 39 for each family member or member of an organisation renting Vikan; EUR 90 for others.
