The Musicians’ Sick Fund reimburses the costs of dental care and prosthetic dental treatment if you have been covered by the Fund for at least one year. The maximum reimbursement is €160 per calendar year.

If dental treatment is necessary to maintain your professional skills or the aesthetic requirements of your profession, you may be eligible for an additional reimbursement of up to €110 per calendar year. Whether dental treatment is essential to your professional skills is assessed on a case-by-case basis. For example, dental treatment provided to wind instrument players is generally considered essential to their professional skills.

Dental treatment for aesthetic reasons may be reimbursed for the treatment of front teeth and canines.

Applying for reimbursement

Dental care reimbursement from the Sick Fund is secondary to compensation available from other sources, such as Kela or your employer. Apply for reimbursement from the Sick Fund only after you have received a decision on any compensation payable by another party. You may then claim from the Sick Fund the portion of the costs not covered by the other party. Attach proof of the compensation paid by Kela or your employer to your application.

Always include the following documents with your reimbursement application to the Sick Fund:

• An itemised statement of treatment received from your dentist
• A receipt for payment of the dentist’s fees
• Any decision regarding compensation paid by Kela or your employer.

If you have submitted the itemised statement of treatment and payment receipt to Kela, attach copies of these documents certified as true copies by Kela to your application to the Sick Fund.

If you receive reimbursement for dental care from your employer, for example under a collective agreement, attach documentation showing how the employer’s annual reimbursement allowance was used during the year in question.

The Musicians’ Sick Fund reimburses hearing test costs for insured members who are not covered by occupational healthcare. The maximum reimbursement is €45 once every three years.

To qualify for reimbursement, you must have been insured under the Sick Fund for at least six months.

If you can receive full reimbursement for the hearing test from another source, such as your employer, you must apply for reimbursement from that source first. The Sick Fund’s reimbursement is secondary.

Applying for reimbursement

Attach the following documents to your application:

• Proof of the costs incurred for the examination
• Proof that the hearing test was carried out.

The Musicians’ Sick Fund reimburses the purchase costs of hearing protection and in-ear monitors up to €100.

The Sick Fund reimburses 50% of the purchase cost of hearing protection, up to a maximum of €100.

Eligibility requirements

To qualify for reimbursement:

• You must have been insured under the Sick Fund for at least 18 months.
• You must work in a noisy environment where the use of hearing protection is justified to prevent hearing loss.
• You must obtain a written reimbursement commitment from the Sick Fund before purchasing the hearing protection.
• The hearing protection must be one of the approved individually fitted, musician-specific earplugs listed above.

How to apply for hearing protection reimbursement

1. Complete the application form and submit it to the Finnish Musicians’ Union office. You can print the form from the bottom of this page or collect it from the Union’s office.
2. The Sick Fund will process your application. If it is approved, the Fund will issue a written reimbursement commitment.
3. Once you have received the reimbursement commitment, you may purchase the hearing protection.
4. You pay the deductible, after which the supplier invoices the remaining amount directly to the Sick Fund.

The Musicians’ Sick Fund reimburses the cost of a psychiatrist’s statement when it is required for an application for Kela’s rehabilitative psychotherapy. The maximum reimbursement is €160 per calendar year during the first, second and third years of treatment.

Reimbursement is available for a medical statement (B statement) relating to rehabilitative psychotherapy regardless of which form of statutory rehabilitative psychotherapy the statement recommends. Eligible forms of therapy may include:

• Individual, group, family or couples psychotherapy
• Art therapy
• Music therapy for people aged 16–25.

Eligibility for reimbursement from the Sick Fund does not depend on whether Kela approves the application for rehabilitative psychotherapy or the therapy recommended in the statement.

For the first year of rehabilitative psychotherapy, a B statement from a specialist physician, i.e. a psychiatrist, is still required. For applications concerning the second and third years, the statement may also be issued by a physician at a health centre or in occupational healthcare. In these cases, a specialist’s statement is not required.

A B medical statement issued by public healthcare costs a maximum of €56.70. However, these are maximum fees, and a wellbeing services county may charge a lower fee or waive it entirely. Fees may therefore vary between wellbeing services counties. Additional charges, such as outpatient clinic fees, may also apply in addition to the medical statement itself.

Applying for reimbursement

You must submit your application to the Sick Fund within six months of the date on which the B medical statement was issued. In addition, you must have been insured under the Sick Fund, meaning that you must have been a member of the Finnish Musicians’ Union, for at least six months before the start of the psychiatrist’s three-month treatment period.

Apply for reimbursement retrospectively and attach the following documents:

• The psychiatrist’s invoice for the treatment period
• Proof of payment
• The B medical statement or another equivalent medical statement
• Details of any compensation received from Kela or another external source.

The Musicians’ Sick Fund may pay a daily allowance for working days lost due to illness until you become eligible for Kela’s sickness allowance. In other words, the Fund provides compensation for Kela’s waiting period.

Kela’s waiting period for sickness allowance consists of the day on which you fall ill and the following nine working days. However, the Sick Fund does not pay a daily allowance for the first day of incapacity for work. Therefore, it is not worth applying for the daily allowance if your incapacity for work lasts only one day.

For self-employed persons insured under YEL (the Finnish self-employed persons’ pension insurance scheme), eligibility for Kela’s sickness allowance begins on the day following the onset of illness. For this reason, self-employed persons insured under YEL should also not apply to the Sick Fund for a daily allowance for the first day of incapacity for work.

How much sickness allowance can you receive?

The full daily allowance equals the agreed pay for the working day in question, up to a maximum of €90 per day.

The Sick Fund’s daily allowance is secondary to statutory sick pay paid by an employer, for example. If an employer pays part of the agreed salary during illness, the Sick Fund pays only the amount needed to bring the combined total of the employer’s payment and the Fund’s allowance up to the Fund’s full daily allowance.

Under the Finnish Employment Contracts Act, an employer’s obligation to pay sick pay depends, among other things, on the duration of the employment relationship. If the employment relationship has lasted less than one month, the employer must pay half of the agreed salary for working days lost during Kela’s waiting period. If the employment relationship has lasted more than one month, the employer must pay 100% of the agreed salary during illness.

The employer’s obligation to pay sick pay requires that the employee’s work has begun before the illness. However, the Sick Fund may also pay a daily allowance if the work has not yet begun, provided that the other eligibility requirements are met.

If you are unemployed

If you were receiving earnings-related unemployment allowance as an unemployed jobseeker immediately before falling ill, your unemployment fund will pay the earnings-related unemployment allowance during Kela’s waiting period until you become eligible for Kela’s sickness allowance. In this case, the Musicians’ Sick Fund does not pay a daily allowance for working days lost due to illness.

Applying for the daily allowance

If your incapacity for work continues long enough for you to become eligible for Kela’s sickness allowance, apply to Kela first. Once you have received Kela’s decision, you can apply to the Sick Fund for a daily allowance covering Kela’s waiting period. Attach Kela’s decision to your application.

Your daily allowance application must include:

• Your tax card
• A certificate from your employer confirming the working days lost and the wages concerned
• A medical certificate.

Your employer must provide details of its obligation to pay wages and your lost earnings on the form on the reverse side of the daily allowance application.

If you apply for compensation from Kela first, ask Kela for a copy of your medical certificate certified as a true copy for the Sick Fund.

Tax is withheld at source from the daily allowance paid by the Sick Fund, and a daily allowance contribution is charged in accordance with the Finnish Health Insurance Act.

You must apply to the Musicians’ Sick Fund in writing within six months of paying the expense that entitles you to reimbursement. After this deadline, reimbursement may be granted only for a special reason and by a decision of the Sick Fund’s Board.

Reimbursement is applied for using an application form. The form specifies which supporting documents are required. You can obtain the form at the bottom of this page or request it from the Finnish Musicians’ Union office.

Reimbursement for hearing protection

To receive reimbursement for hearing protection, you must obtain a reimbursement commitment from the Sick Fund before purchasing the products. For other reimbursements, payment is made to the applicant against a receipt or medical certificate.

To qualify for benefits from the Musicians’ Sick Fund, you must have completed the applicable waiting period, meaning the minimum period of membership in the Union.

The following benefits require six months of membership:

• Daily allowance during incapacity for work
• Hospital and health centre daily treatment fees for inpatient care
• Hearing test costs
• Costs of a psychiatrist’s statement relating to rehabilitative psychotherapy.

Dental care reimbursement requires at least one year of insurance coverage.

Reimbursement for hearing protection requires at least 18 months of insurance coverage.
